Compost Workshop

Everything starts with microbiology. And that is precisely why, at ERDIG, so much revolves around compost – the network of microorganisms and fungi that transforms your soils. In our compost workshop, we produce biologically complete compost substrate that can be used to produce extract.

Our goal is not only to make this microbiology usable for agriculture, but also to research it and contribute to a better fundamental understanding.

Compost substrate

ERDIG compost substrate

For the Swiss market, ERDIG currently offers a substrate from third-party producers for extract production that is listed on the FiBL input list (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) and may therefore be used in organic farming.

At the same time, we are developing our own biologically complete substrate, which is expected to be offered for sale as certified from autumn 2026.

Below you will learn how we produce ERDIG compost substrate.

Production process

High-quality ingredients, careful maturation, tested quality

We produce our ERDIG compost substrate with great dedication, hands-on work, and the highest quality standards. The basis is flawless, carefully selected ingredients:

  • Fresh, separated organic cattle manure
  • Chipped and shredded wood, both fresh and stored for varying lengths of time
  • Leaves
  • Fresh grass clippings or green manure
  • Biolite and zeolite
  • Biochar
  • Finished compost for inoculation
  • Water

So that the fungal components can thrive, our composts are composted statically with good aeration after an initial heat phase. At the same time, we place great emphasis on sufficient moisture, which makes the work easier for fungi and compost worms.

After around 9–12 months of storage, the result is a microbially complete, living compost substrate with a pronounced fungi-to-bacteria ratio that can be used to produce extract. Each batch is examined microscopically multiple times, subjected to the cress test, and checked in accordance with guidelines.

PROPERTIES

Living substrate, rich in fungi and microbial diversity

ERDIG compost substrate is developed specifically for producing compost extract. We produce a biologically complete substrate that contains not only a high diversity of bacterial life, but especially fungal life, as well as a wide range of beneficial protozoa and nematodes. This microbial community brings life back to your soil.

Our ERDIG substrate is not ordinary compost and is used not as a fertilizer, but as an inoculum (vaccine) – with the aim of re-establishing the network of beneficial microorganisms in your soil.

Applied to your soils as an extract, the active life in this substrate helps regenerate soil biology, improve aggregate formation and soil structure, and re-establish long-term soil function and nutrient cycles.

Compost wanted

We are looking for compost for Europe

Everything starts with microbiology. And more and more farmers in Europe are looking for high-quality compost substrate for producing compost extract. We believe that many hands can achieve more than a few –and that local microbiology is the best.

Do you produce biologically complete substrate in larger quantities and offer it for sale with the necessary local certification? Then please get in touch so that we can review a partnership.
